PROJECT SPOTLIGHT ON DPR CONSTRUCTION

  • 11-story healthcare center

DPR is one of the most trusted contractors in America. Founded in 1990, they are driven by their four core values: integrity, enjoyment, uniqueness and ever-forward. The construction field was built around manual labor, but technology has become a growing part of builders’ jobs.  DPR welcomed the addition of FinishLine technology to their work processes, and they have experienced the benefits first hand.

The Palomar Medical Center is one of the largest hospitals built in California in recent years. At over 740,000 square feet, the 11-story center has 360 beds, 12 operating rooms, and employs over 1,700 people. Designed by CO Architects with green values in mind, the building features an undulating green roof, recycled and renewable materials, and natural day lighting through skylights and light wells. Dubbed the “hospital of the future”, it won the ENR California Best Projects 2012 award and ENR National Best Healthcare Project 2012 award.
When shopping for software to replace clipboards and spreadsheets, DPR evaluated FinishLine against its competitors. They knew they needed a sophisticated system for tracking information. They wanted something quick, easy, and accessible by multiple users. Kevin Britt, one of the leaders of the Scheduling and Planning technology movement at DPR, said that when DPR chose FinishLine, they basically eliminated most of their paperwork. “We wanted the field team members to feel a sense of ownership and the ability to feel empowered to make and share various changes in the field in a more efficient manner. We didn't want any of our resources processing copious amounts of paper through each organization - we wanted instant status updates, virtually, without punch list binders. We chose FinishLine over its competitors based on its virtual accessibility and the simplified 2D graphical interface that is easily understood by all players on the project" said Britt. Many people find that FinishLine’s attention to intuitive visual communication makes it more user friendly than its competitors. No tech expertise is needed to use FinishLine.

Often, it can be difficult using a new technology for internal communication. “Some of our extended Team members were reluctant at first“, Britt commented, “but we gave them full access, gave them the full schedule, and gave them a window of opportunity when they could punch out an area. They walked out, got it done and it all worked better than we planned. “ A great compliment about FinishLine came from Greg Schneekluth, a Senior Associate at CO ARCHITECTS who said “By collaborating with DPR to incorporate FinishLine into our weekly field walk and site observation routine, our ‘area champion teams’ were able to easily look up and retrieve on-going quality control entries well ahead of the more formal, final punch list efforts. FinishLine became a vital tool that greatly improved our ability to identify and communicate items of concern in short order.”

There are two major areas where time savings occur with FinishLine; one being on site, doing inspections, and the other being off site, generating reports, cataloging data, and getting in touch with subcontractors. DPR experienced significant savings in both areas. When asked about how FinishLine helped DPR save time in the field, he explained they had broken the project into 35,000 square foot areas and given the design team a window of one week to walk through and punch them out. They did this thinking about the traditional time frame of how long it takes with paper and clipboards. They were able to walk off each of the areas in six to eight hours.
DPR used PC tablets and the Motorola Xoom with FinishLine, and although not every person in the field used a tablet, FinishLine helped speed up the process immensely. “Working with subcontractors who didn’t have the technology, didn’t hamper the efficiency of our process. A team leader would print and distribute the reports to the field crews for their punch list. We found this method to be a lot faster than we had anticipated and we didn’t even fully utilize the capability of the system“, said Britt, explaining that not everybody has to have a tablet in order for FinishLine to be effective.  FinishLine speeds up the administrative process of cataloguing information and generating reports for the subcontractors. Using a tablet in the field is only one part of FinishLine, and it is by no means the most important element in its usage.
"...as DPR has become one of the leaders in sustainability, it (FinishLine) allowed us to basically go paperless. And most importantly, the customer service was great. We always received quick responses from everybody at FinishLine."

DPR appreciated all the benefits that FinishLine helped them to achieve. “One of the biggest things was visual control, having the rapid access to simple floor plans, and being able to track all the issues accordingly“, observed Britt. “Additionally, as DPR has become one of the leaders in sustainability, it allowed us to basically go paperless. And most importantly, the customer service was great. We always received quick responses from everybody at FinishLine." DPR has used FinishLine to save time, money and reach their inspection goals in a timely, efficient manner. They have deployed FinishLine on a hospital project in San Francisco; a University in Florida; Commercial Buildings in San Diego; as well as the famed Max Planck Florida Research Institute.
